There are 5 important stages that your body goes through during a normal night's sleep. It begins with a relaxation of the entire body and a very light sleep. You can be easily awakened at any point during this time. In the next stage, the activity in your brain will start to slow down and eye movement stops. As you hit the third stage your brain waves slow down and start to become Delta waves. In stage 4 all brain waves become Delta waves, and this leads you directly into stage five, known as Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep. At this point your eyes will move rapidly, you will start to dream and the sleep cycle is completed.
This sleep cycle should repeat constantly throughout the night, and it is important to go through each stage. People who experience sleep disturbances may never reach stage 5 because they are woken up before it happens. Everyone needs REM sleep each night, but there are a variety of factors that can cause you to miss it.
